Windham Podiums in Washougal

While things are heating up in the AMA Outdoor National motocross series, the weather was much cooler as the circuit headed for Washougal, Wash. last weekend.

One rider who is not cooling off is Team AMSOIL rider Kevin Windham. The veteran star has been pushing his Honday CRF 450 to the podium the past few weeks and Washougal was no different. In the first moto, K-Dub started strong, coming out of the first turn in second. He would fight the front of the pack in a back and forth battle, finally ending up in sixth. Things went his way in the second moto, getting out front early. The Louisianna rider rode strong, riding second for much of the race. A misread on the final lap cost Windham a position as he dropped back to third. For the weekend, Windham finished fourth overall and currently sits seventh in the season points race.

In the Lites class, Josh Grant rebounded from his sixth place, moto-one finish with a top-five, fourth in moto 2. Grant's ten points was good enough for fourth overall and helped distance himself for the third place, overall battle he is having with Jason Lawrence. Grant leads Lawrence by 30 points. Teammate Jake Weimer also finsihed the weekend strong. After finishing 13th in moto 1, Weimer rebounded with an eighth for an eighth overall.

AMSOIL, the exclusive Official Oil of the AMA Outdoor Nationals, will welcome the circuit back to the Midwest in two weeks. The series returns to Millville, Minn. for the ninth round of racing. This week, you can catch Windham and Grant competing in ESPN's X Games.

Until then, we'll see you at the races,

Autuwn Woods Strong on East Coast Swing

Autumn Woods Racing has been tearing up the east coast of the United States the past couple of weeks. The duo of Jeff Dedick and Ricky Brantley took part in two 4-Wheel Jamboree events the past couple of weeks.
July 13-15 brought the pair to Bloomsburg, Pa. Dedick led the way into the bracket-style showdown as the number one qualifier. Brantley was two spots behind him in third. Running the small "S"-course with tight turns and heavy dust cover made the side-by-side racing difficult. Dedick pushed his truck in semi-finals, but was held off by Sonny Dohrmund and finished fourth.

In his heat race, Brantley went head-to-head with Colin Dorshimer. A mechanical problem pushed him out of the race, finishing third.

Last weekend brought the AWR team to Middletown, N.Y. for a NORRA event July18-19. 16 Pro-Modified and 7 Unlimited trucks found themselves on the muddy track.

Dedick took part in the 5-lap, Pro-Modified race. Dedick, who took a second in his qualifying race, pushed his truck into second but was an able to get around a lapped rider to contend for the lead.
Adam Pautsch also drove an AMSOIL sponsored truck in the Pro-Modified class. Despite finishing second in his heat race, Pautsch was unable to finish the feature due to mechanical issues.
Dedick then switched trucks and ran in the Unlimited class. The veteran driver pushed his off-road rig into second, but once again, the slower trucks blocked his path for the win.

Autumn Woods will be back on the road again to Canfield Ohio, Buffalo N.Y. and Essex Junction Vt. in the coming weeks.

Until then, we'll see you at the races,

Smith Wins at Summernationals

Team AMSOIL late model driver Brady Smith picked up his biggest career win last week at the UMP Summernationals in Farmer City, Illinois.

Following his heat race victory, Smith took the lead on lap 14 of the feature and dominated the remainder of the race to finish ahead of Brian Shirley, Wes Steidinger, Shannon Babb, and Steve Sheppard, Jr. The $10,000 payday was the biggest in Smith's racing career.

“Boy, it really feels good to get over the hump and get that first big win,” said Smith. “We have been right there several times, but we finally put an entire night together at Farmer City. This AMSOIL car has been awesome and last week was no exception. I have to thank AMSOIL, Big Red Motorsports, Bloomquist Race Cars, Vic Hill Racing Engines, and all of my other sponsors, as well as my family and crew for all of their help and support!”

The Farmer City Raceway was only one of five tracks that Brady invaded last week. In all, he earned one victory, three Top Five efforts, and four Top Ten performances during his week on the grueling UMP Summernationals circuit.

Smith will enter four World of Outlaws Late Model Series shows from July 25-28 at the following venues:

July 25 Attica (OH) Raceway Park, World of Outlaws
July 26 Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway, World of Outlaws
July 27 Eldora (OH) Speedway, World of Outlaws
July 28 Sharon (OH) Speedway, World of Outlaws

Teague Wins Class in Long Beach

AMSOIL off-shore powerboat driver Bob Teague found his first win of the season at the Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association sanctioned event, the 96th Annual Long Beach Sea Fest.

Teague, racing in his AMSOIL SuperCat Lite boat, took part in Sunday's "Rum Run", a traditional endurance race in the open ocean. The event covered 78-miles, much of it on the rough waters of the Pacific Ocean. The slower boats are in the first start and the faster boats are in the second start (about five minutes later). Altogether, there were 25 boats racing at the same time. The AMSOIL SuperCat Lite boat was in the second start. Despite waves racing four feet, the AMSOIL SuperCat Lite was the first boat to the first turn heading out to sea.

"We maintained great speed with perfect navigation for the entire 78 mile course passing all of the competitors except one that is in the senior Extreme Unlimited Cat Class (CRC)," said Teague. Ultimately, the CRC boat finished the race in a time of 44:36, and we finished second overall (first in class) just 19 seconds behind the 2400 plus horsepower CRC boat with an elapsed time of 44:55."

The AMSOIL #77 boat and rig are back on the road, headed for St. Clair, Michigan this weekend.

AMSOIL Wild Cat Open Championship

Rossville, Ind. -- Sunday's AMSOIL Wild Cat Open Championship proved pivotal in the 2007 WPSA PowerSports ATV Tour as winners returned to victory lane, and the Pro points leads changed hands.

In the end, Chad Wienen won his fourth SuperQuad Pro 450 final, and Chris Borich earned his fifth QuadTerrain Pro Stock win in six attempts this season. Meanwhile John Natalie, Jr. took the lead in the SuperQuad Pro 450 championship, while Jesse West grabbed the top slot in the QuadTerrain Pro Stock points chase.
"I was busted up pretty bad," said Natalie of the injuries he suffered latelast year. "I had a torn sternum, as well as ACL and MCL injuries. We just kept fighting. I rode through the pain, we came back, and now we're in the points lead--which is where we belong. This takes a lot of heart. I don't have time to do anything else. All day long, I just work on bikes and ride. I eat, sleep and breath racing, and now it's starting to pay off."

The AMSOIL Wild Cat Open Championships will be telecast on ESPN2 on Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. EDT. The next race for the PowerSports ATV Tour, the Raceway Park National, is scheduled for Aug. 18-19 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.

Douglas On Podium in Bark River

World Series of Off Road Racing
Rounds 5&6 - Bark River, Mich.

Team AMSOIL drivers Scott Douglas and Mike Oberg pushed their off-road trucks to the limit last weekend in Bark River, Mich. The Super Team members had momentum on their side after a strong showing in Crandon in mid-June.

Oberg, who made the trip to Bark River with a slim, one-point lead in the Pro 2wd class, was looking to increase that lead on the revamped Michigan track. Oberg ran strong all weekend long. During Saturday's race, the Eagle River, Wis. native pushed the front of the pack and was running in third. Unfortunately, Oberg pushed a little too hard on the gigantic "hill" jump, flying more than 150 feet in the air and landing violently. Oberg was forced to pit and officially recorded a sixth place finish. On Sunday, Oberg got back in the groove and drove his Chevy to a fourth place finish. After six rounds, Oberg is now tied with Scott Taylor for second with 118 points.

In the Pro 4x4 class, Douglas again found his Ford F-150 on the podium. Oberg, who drove for Douglas in the first two rounds, won both events and Douglas posted another win during round three at Crandon. The El Cajon, Calif. resident pushed his AMSOIL/Kumho tires truck towards the front in both races, finishing on the podium in second on Sunday. On Saturday, he banged his way around the track for a sixth. For the season, is fourth overall with 78 points and lest than 25 points from the first place driver.

The WSORR will be back in action on August 10-12 for three rounds of racing. The series will be hosting a make-up date for a postponed event earlier this year. All three rounds will be held at Bark River.

Windham Wins at Unadilla

Photos courtesy: Steve Bruhn

With Ricky Carmichael in quasi-retirement mode and James Stewart sitting in the hospital after crashing during practice, the sixth round of the AMA Outdoor Nationals was up for grabs last weekend in Unadilla, N.Y.

When the checkered flag fell after two wild motos, Team AMSOIL motocross rider Kevin Windham had a 3-1 score and his first AMA Motocross overall win in nearly four years.

With rain starting to fall, Mike Alessi grabbed the holeshot, with Windham right behind him. The one-two positions would hold until the 28-minute mark when Windham capitalized on an Alessi mistake. It was the first time that K-Dub had won a moto since he won two years ago at the same track.

Moto two’s holeshot went to Davi Millsaps, while Windham settled into third. He would battle Alessi again, but only for one lap after Alessi had to pit because of goggle problems. Tim Ferry was able to work through the pack and take the win. Windham, knowing that third was good enough for the win, kept his position throughout the race.

In the Lites class, AMSOIL riders Josh Grant and Jake Weimer continued their quest for a season championship. Grant finished in sixth in moto 1 and fifth in moto 2, taking fourth overall for the weekend. Weimer was strong in the first moto, finishing seventh, but couldn’t duplicate his top ten ride and finished 14th in the second moto for tenth overall. Grant is third in the points race and Weimer dropped down to sixth.
Team AMSOIL will be following the AMA Outdoor Nationals to Lakewood, Colo. this weekend for the seventh round of racing. The AMA will air all of the races from New York on SPEED this week.

Summer Heats Up for Smith

Team AMSOIL late model driver Brady Smith has been tearing up the countryside looking for wins in his AMSOIL/Chevy Monte Carlo. Here's a look at how Smith has been doing the past couple of weeks:

July 6-8, 2007 -- Smith and his team invaded the Volunteer State of Tennessee for a pair of NARA Late Model Dirt Series events. On Friday night, July 6, the Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, Tenn played host to a $10,000 to win show. Smith finished second in his competitive heat race to earn the inside fourth row starting spot for the 75-lap feature event. During the course of the A-Main, Smith was able to get by three cars en route to a fourth place finish behind winner Jimmy Owens, Scott James, and Scott Bloomquist.

The action then turned to the Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee on Saturday for another $10,000 to win event. Smith could only muster a sixth place finish in his heat race, but rallied to win his B-Main to earn a coveted starting spot in the main event. The Solon Springs, Wis. native rolled off 18th for the A-Main and quickly pointed his AMSOIL/Bloomquist machine towards the front of the field. Smith was able to pass 16 of the best Dirt Late Model drivers in the country to earn a strong runner-up performance to car builder Scott Bloomquist. All of the exciting racing action at the "Gap" on Saturday was taped by the cameras of SPEED Channel for viewing later in the season.

July 9, 2007 -- Smith was in action at the C.J. Raceway in Columbus Junction, Iowa, as the UMP Summernationals tour invaded the Hawkeye State for the first time in 2007. Smith finished fourth in his competitive heat race and rolled off from the fifth row for the $6,000 to win A-Main. At the conclusion of the feature event, Smith was credited with a strong fourth place performance behind winner Shannon Babb, Don O'Neal, and Billy Moyer.

July 10, 2007 -- The UMP Summernationals tour continued at the Quincy Raceway in Quincy, Ill. and another $6,000 top prize was up for grabs. Smith finished second in his heat race before driving his AMSOIL Monte Carlo to a strong third place effort in the A-Main behind winner Shannon Babb and runner-up Dennis Erb.

Smith will be at the LaSalle Speedway on Thursday, July 12 and at the Farmer Cit Raceway in Farmer City, Ill. on Friday night.

Autumn Woods Double Dips in Springfield

The Autumn Woods Racing team of Jeff Dedick and Ricky Brantley continued their team success at the Special Events 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals in Springfield, Ill. on June 23-24.

Monsoon-style rains flooded the outdoor track, turning the event into a slop-fest. Qualifying rounds were cancelled on Saturday leaving the entire field of teams on stand-by for Sunday's final.

Despite more wet weather on Sunday, the Jamboree held a one-lap qualifying for placement in the bracket-style racing. With conditions being to dangerous for side-by-side racing, singled-timed runs would determine the weekend winners. Time measured by a single stopwatch placed Dedick into second by a narrow 2/10ths of a second. Just behind Dedick was teammate Brantley in third.

For the season, AWR trucks remain in second (Dedick) and third (Brantley) respectively in overall points.

AWR will be in Bloomsburg, Pa. for an ESPN-recorded 4-Wheel Jamboree on July 13-15.

WPSA Showcases Sweep

AMSOIL, the exclusive Official Oil of the WPSA ATV series, took part in last weekends racing at the Virginia Motorsports Park.

John Natalie, Jr. and Chris Borich swept the Pro ATV finals on Sunday. The event will be telecast on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. EDT on ESPN 2.

"I think this is the best I've ridden all year," said Natalie. "I had a little more than a week to prepare for this race, which is the most I've had all year due to injuries. So that really paid off."

Borich outclassed the QuadTerrain Pro Stock field, leading every lap of the final.

"This is great for Can-Am," said Borich. "I'm here to help Can-Am, and I'm having a ball doing it. This is great."

The next race for the PowerSports ATV Tour, the AMSOIL Wild Cat Open Championship, is scheduled for July 21-22 at Wild Cat Creek MX in Rossville, Ind.
