Windham Wins at Unadilla

With Ricky Carmichael in quasi-retirement mode and James Stewart sitting in the hospital after crashing during practice, the sixth round of the AMA Outdoor Nationals was up for grabs last weekend in Unadilla, N.Y.

When the checkered flag fell after two wild motos, Team AMSOIL motocross rider Kevin Windham had a 3-1 score and his first AMA Motocross overall win in nearly four years.

With rain starting to fall, Mike Alessi grabbed the holeshot, with Windham right behind him. The one-two positions would hold until the 28-minute mark when Windham capitalized on an Alessi mistake. It was the first time that K-Dub had won a moto since he won two years ago at the same track.

Moto two’s holeshot went to Davi Millsaps, while Windham settled into third. He would battle Alessi again, but only for one lap after Alessi had to pit because of goggle problems. Tim Ferry was able to work through the pack and take the win. Windham, knowing that third was good enough for the win, kept his position throughout the race.

In the Lites class, AMSOIL riders Josh Grant and Jake Weimer continued their quest for a season championship. Grant finished in sixth in moto 1 and fifth in moto 2, taking fourth overall for the weekend. Weimer was strong in the first moto, finishing seventh, but couldn’t duplicate his top ten ride and finished 14th in the second moto for tenth overall. Grant is third in the points race and Weimer dropped down to sixth.
Team AMSOIL will be following the AMA Outdoor Nationals to Lakewood, Colo. this weekend for the seventh round of racing. The AMA will air all of the races from New York on SPEED this week.
Until then, we'll see you at the races,
