Wanderscheid Races in Rock River

PJ Wanderscheid headed south to Iowa for an oval ice race this past weekend. The AMSOIL World Champion put together three strong heats on Saturday in Rock River to advance to the Dash for Cash final. Still using his 440 sled instead of the teams new 600 chassis, Wanderscheid brought home a fifth place finish in the dash.

The racing was delayed on Sunday due to morning fog. After the 1:00 p.m. start, Wanderscheid pushed his AMSOIL/Arctic Cat into a second, third and fourth in his Pro Open heats. In the Pro Open Final he finished sixth and followed that up with a 7th in the Champ 440 final.

The AMSOIL/Wanderscheid oval ice racing team will be back on the track in Ironwood, Mich. after the first of the year. The January 5-6 race will be the first round of the USSA series.

Wanderscheid Opens Season in Top 5

Three time AMSOIL Eagle River World Champion PJ Wanderscheid opened up the 2007-08 oval ice racing season in Beausejour, Manitoba last weekend.

Wanderscheid and his AMSOIL team worked hard in the off season to develop a Pro-Stock 600 snowmobile by utilizing Arctic Cat's new 600 Pro-Stock Sno-x racer. In past years, Wanderscheid found success in the 600 class by using a modified 440 chassis. The team hopes to unveil the new sled in Rock River, Iowa this weekend and went into Beausejour competing with a 440 in both classes.

In Beausejour, about 50 miles north of Winnipeg, the temperature dropped to -15 degrees, cold even for oval ice racing in December. On Saturday, the AMSOIL team competed in three heats, finishing in either third or fourth in each. In the 600 final, Wanderscheid battled with Gary Moyle. While the team continued to work on the new sleds handling, the team found great speed on the straightaways. When the checkered flag fell, Wanderscheid cross the finish line in fifth.

The temps warmed up on Sunday and Wanderscheid pushed the AMSOIL sled in position to grab the holeshot. Unfortunately he was unable to hold the line and was sent into the hay bales. Once restarted, Wanderscheid maneuvered his AMSOIL/Arctic Cat into a final finishing position of fifth.

"It was actually a very promising weekend of racing for the AMSOIL team," said Wanderscheid. Our sled was fast and very bulletproof as we continued to dial in the handling, The sled was very predictable and responsive to our changes. We are looking forward to getting on the track at Rock Rapids, Iowa this coming week. It will allow us to race on a track that closely resembles the track at the AMSOIL Eagle River Derby."

Lovell's End Season on High Note

As the 2007 season comes to a close, the Lovell Brothers have much to celebrate as the AMSOIL sponsored rock racing team returned from Phoenx with not only one, but two wins.

The UROC Rock Cross season finale was held at the Firebird Raceway under what are normally sunny skies. The weather was not cooperative, however, as it rained several inches the day before the event. Mud and standing water were everywhere on the course.
“One thing about rock crawlers is that they hate mud,” says driver Brad Lovell, “I think more than one team was reluctant to drive out of the pits.”

As racing started, the trucks quickly became indistinguishable. The Lovell's got smart in a hurry and procured some tear-off goggles. They sported the fastest qualifying time and took pole position for the first heat race. The green flag then dropped and six vehicles left the line. Brad and Roger Lovell got the hole shot and lead the pack into the jumps. The tangle of trucks went around the track but the FABTECH Ranger pulled away for a win.

In the next round of racing, and while in the lead, the brothers jarred an oil line loose and were forced to stop.
“Brad kept pushing it after the cloud of white smoke went away,” recalls Roger, “After a while I noted the pressure gauge at zero. I don’t know about other oils, but I think we owe AMSOIL an engine and some major thanks.”

Even with the malfunction, the brothers won the Modified Class by forfeit as the other qualified vehicles were broken before the final round.

Next up was the Pure Adrenaline Shootout which was a race between any vehicles left running. Despite a fan issue, the Lovell's held off the rest of the pack for most of the race. The fan breaker kept popping out and killing the truck. n the end, Campbell the lead truck of Campbell was disqualified for missing the turn and Lovell Racing was once again declared the winner.

There is not much of a break before the 2008 season takes off. The first event for the team will be the inaugural King of the Hammers 40 mile Rock Race on Feb, 22nd.

Until then, we'll see you at the races,
